Lydlinch Common
During Mid-May I took a visit to Lydlinch Common after noting on the Uk Butterflies site that it had a good variety of species. It’s fairly close to Alners Gorse, so I also checked that out on the trip – nothing really of note there on this occasion.
The first corner produced a patiently sitting Small Copper butterfly. I say patient, but the pose was not held as it always seemed to get itself into an angle where you could not get the focal plane parallel to it. This is my best shot of it. Not brilliant, but it maybe shows why I embarrassingly thought it was some kind of hairstreak till I had it id’d on the Uk Butterflies forum. Or maybe not!

There were lots of Lackey Moth caterpillars at Lydlinch – and my favourite shot of one of them munching away is shown below. They can look really funny with the hairs sprouting from them.

Also in abundance were these blue moths ( A type of Forester Moth – Zygaenidae), and these two posed nicely on some bugle.

Being a windy day, the low growing Vetch plants were a more sheltered plant, which helped in getting the following shots during pauses in the wind. A Tripod really helps on windy days as it removes one side of the shake. It’s just the plant rather than me that I have to worry about!

An finally in a fairly sheltered corner this little blue butterfly was roosting on a bit of grass.
