Bubble and Spice
Took some time yesterday evening to have a play with oil, washing up liquid bubbles and water. Been a while since I have shot any oil on water, and a wet February evening seemed like a good time to try it out again.
I had the water, oil and said washing up bubbles in a small clear plastic tube, supported by some books. Under this was a light table, and a couple of old DVDs, onto which I bounce the light from a permanently on LED light source (Amaran Aperture AL198c). This reflected a spectrum effect up through the water and oil. I took the shots on a 2 second timer at a wide aperture, using live view to preview the colour mix. I used my 100mm Lens for these shots.
After processing the images in Adobe Camera Raw ( CC ), I used Topaz Adjust 5, and some different vibrant preset mixes to finish of the image to a kind of grungy look. (One of the presets used was Spicify – hence the corny image titles).
The following four images are my favourites from the shoot, and below are a couple of shots of the setup – taken on a phone camera.

Below shows the camera and tripod, looking down to the water box.
And below a closer shot of the water box and dvds.
Looks a lot of fun. I keep meaning to do a few more texture or patterns type macro but dang there just aren’t enough hours in the day 🙁
Thanks Johan.
It is a lot of fun. But as you say finding time is the key.
