Bentley Wood

I had an end of May visit to Bentley Wood, with the weather sunny but not overly hot for the time of year.  There were the odd Fritillary butterflies about, but their usual area near the car park was very busy, so I decided to have a walk around the woods in the hope they might be in another couple of patches that they sometimes can be seen at.  Alas, this was not to be, but I did find a couple of other butterfly species that were first finds of the year for their species for me.  This Small Heath, not being the best or prettiest shot, but shows some parasites on the body.

Whereas this Speckled Wood was more healthy.

I also took a smaller insect this female Scorpion fly.

I was also fortunate to see a briefly landed Emperor Dragonfly

And another Odonata first for the year after a bit of persistent chasing of a chaser.
